Networks stockpiling nano SIM cards for iPhone

There currently is speculation that the iPhone 5 will sport a Nano SIM card. It has been reported by the Financial Times that the European cell phone networks are stockpiling these new types of SIM cards in the anticipation of huge demand for the next iPhone release. The networks are doing this now as previously they were caught out with the release of the iPhone 4 and the iPad when there were not enough micro-SIM cards available. This may have impacted on sales, increasing wait times for devices to be sent out to customers.

This is clear indication that the new iPhone is either in production or about to be and the networks are preparing themselves for release in September or October.

Compared to the Micro SIM card the nano-SIM card which was recently ratified is 40% smaller. It is also very possible that the nano SIM if released with the iPhone 5 will also be available for future generations of iPads and even the iPad mini, if Apple does manufacture it.

There has been no word from Apple themselves and as always they never comment on future devices. With iDevices getting slimmer Apple would want to miniaturize as much of the hardware as possible, even the SIM card found in these devices.

iPad 3G Micro-SIM card

SIM card (subscriber identity module) standard allows GSM phones to interchange SIM cards to switch networks.
